A Mind-Bending Morning at the Museum of Illusions, Rosebank – A Journey Beyond Reality
By: Sue McWha
If you’re looking for a unique and unforgettable experience in Johannesburg, the Museum of Illusions in Rosebank should be at the top of your list. On Friday, 7 March, I had the pleasure of accompanying a lively group of AEG students on a morning visit to this extraordinary attraction — and what a fascinating adventure it turned out to be!
Where Reality Bends and Minds are Blown
Located in the buzzing Zone @ Rosebank, the Museum of Illusions is an interactive wonderland where perception and reality collide. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted by a series of mind-bending exhibits that challenge what you think you see.
This isn’t your typical museum. Here, touching, interacting, and posing with the illusions are encouraged! The museum is packed with visual puzzles, holograms, illusionary rooms, and sensory experiences designed to make you question how the mind interprets what the eyes see.
Highlights of the Experience
Our group was blown away by the Vortex Tunnel, a rotating cylinder that tricks your brain into thinking the walkway is moving — even if you are standing perfectly still. Watching everyone stumble and laugh as they tried to walk through was a highlight in itself!
Next up was the Ames Room, where people appear to grow or shrink in size depending on which corner they stand. The students were particularly fascinated by how their size seemed to change in an instant.
The Infinity Mirror Room and anti-gravity room were huge hits. Everyone enjoyed taking Instagram-worthy shots that made them look like they were floating or walking on walls.
Warm and Welcoming Staff
What truly added to the experience was the incredible museum staff. Friendly, patient, and knowledgeable, they guided us through the different exhibitions, explaining the science and psychology behind each illusion. Their enthusiasm was contagious, and they made sure everyone — no matter their English level — felt included and understood.
A Cultural Connection
One of the most beautiful parts of this visit was watching how people from completely different parts of the world came together to enjoy the experience. Whether from Saudi Arabia or Thailand, Guinea or the Democratic Republic of Congo, everyone reacted the same way — wide eyes, amazed smiles, and lots of playful photos.
One of the students summed it up perfectly:
“I didn’t expect to enjoy this so much. It’s not just for kids — it really makes you think about how your brain works. And we had so much fun!”
